Point Loma is a water front community situated on a peninsula in the southwest section  of the City of San Diego.    At its southern “point” (south of naval base) you’ll find the Cabrillo National Monument, home of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which has been a San Diego icon for over 150 years.  With its close proximity to beaches, San Diego Bay and downtown, Point Loma is one of the most desirable and convenient locations in San Diego.  Nearly 48,000 residents call Point Loma (and neighboring Ocean Beach) home.  Here are five reasons to love Point Loma:

1.       Sunset Cliffs.  Nestled south of Ocean Beach is Sunset Cliffs.  The beachside area is home to the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park; a 68-acre, 1 ½ mile long, regional park along Point Loma’s western shoreline.  The views are beautiful because of the amazing cliff formations and caves above the ocean’s shore.  If you’re looking for a scenic walk or picnic area, this is your spot.

2.       Shelter Island.   Shelter Island is one of San Diego’s principal boating centers.  The area is home to marinas, hotels, restaurants, and parks and is a great area for walking, biking, and bonfires.  If you haven’t yet, check out Humphrey’s summer “Concerts by the Bay” which attract nationally known  musicians and comedians.

3.       Liberty Station.  Liberty Station/NTC Promenade is a mixed-use development where you can do it all – eat, shop, play, live, vacation, and more.  The 2013 addition of Stone Brewing Bistro and Gardens is a definite highlight with its outdoor cinema, beautiful garden grounds, and 40 taps of craft beer.  There are several parks, tot lots and walking paths behind Liberty Station that front on an inlet of San Diego Bay.  We were married on this inlet behind the Hilton Homewood Suites and the Courtyard Marriott (both great hotel spots for travelers) which although public, provided a surprisingly private feel.

4.       Scenery.  Point Loma is home to some of the most beautiful views in all of San Diego, not only visible from hillside properties, but by foot as you travel along miles of ocean or bayside paths.  Along the ocean side, you have sunset views overlooking Sunset Cliffs and on the San Diego Bay side, you have sunrise views overlooking the Bay and downtown San Diego.  If you’re looking for large view lots, Point Loma is a great choice!

5.       Food.  Point Loma is home to many San Diego favorites.  Point Loma Seafoods is the perfect place to stop for fresh fish and other seafood fare.  If you’re into grub and grog, try Fathom Bistro Bait & Tackle on the Shelter Island Pier.  For Italian flair, check out Pummaro or  the Pomodoro Ristorante Italiano and for Asian cuisine, you can’t go wrong with Supannee House of Thai or Sushi Mura.

We lived near Shelter Island for a couple of years and absolutely loved life in Point Loma.  Since we left in 2010, the area gained several new restaurant bars which give the community a pretty fun night life.  Whether you’re looking to visit or live, we highly recommend Point Loma!  We’d love to hear your thoughts on the community and would be happy to assist buyers, sellers, and developers with their Point Loma projects.
